The three calls we take most often with caravans are a blown tyre on the van, a wheel bearing or brake that has run hot, and a tow car that has given up with the outfit still attached. Each one needs a different answer. A tyre can often be changed at the roadside if there is somewhere safe to jack it. A hot bearing means the van should not roll another mile. A dead tow car means we are moving a caravan that suddenly has nothing to pull it.
Where you stop is the difficult part. An outfit is long, and Cornish laybys are short. If you can reach a farm entrance, a wide verge or a pub car park before stopping, take it, because it makes the recovery quicker, safer and cheaper than working alongside moving traffic on a single carriageway.
Never keep driving on a caravan tyre that has failed at speed. The van will start to move around behind you, and the damage spreads from the tyre to the wheel arch, the floor and sometimes the axle. Slow down, get off the road, and ring from a safe spot.

Can you change a caravan tyre at the roadside?
Often yes, if there is firm level ground to jack from and the road is safe to work on. If the wheel or hub has been damaged by running on a flat, it becomes a recovery instead.
The wheel is smoking or smells hot. Is it safe to carry on to the site?
No. That is usually a bearing or a binding brake and continuing risks losing the wheel. Stop as soon as you safely can and call us.
Where will you take the caravan?
To your site, a storage yard, a dealer or a repairer. If you are mid holiday and do not know the area, tell us and we will talk through the realistic options.
Do you move caravans that are not broken down?
Yes, single caravan moves between storage, home and site are a planned job rather than an emergency, and we quote those separately.
