How It Works

Wrong Fuel in Your Car: What to Do Next

One decision decides whether this is an inconvenience or an engine bill. Make it before you turn the key.

Wrong Fuel in Your Car — Broadside Recovery flatbed working in Cornwall

Misfuelling is common, and it is not usually a disaster — provided you do not start the engine. Petrol in a diesel is the more damaging combination, because diesel systems rely on the fuel itself to lubricate high-pressure components.

The difference between a drain-and-flush and a serious repair is almost entirely whether the wrong fuel was circulated.

Do this immediately

  • Do not start the engine. Do not turn the ignition to the position that primes the fuel pump.
  • If you have already started it, switch off straight away and do not restart.
  • Put the vehicle in neutral and push it clear of the pump if it is safe and there are enough people.
  • Tell the forecourt staff — they deal with this regularly.
  • Call for recovery and say clearly which fuel went into which vehicle.

Why not starting it matters so much

With the engine off, the wrong fuel is largely still in the tank. That is a drain, a flush and correct fuel — unpleasant but contained.

Once the engine runs, the wrong fuel is pumped through the filter, the pump and the injectors. In a diesel, petrol strips lubrication from components machined to very fine tolerances, and damage can happen quickly.

How the vehicle gets moved

A misfuelled car is recovered on the flatbed to a garage of your choice, or home if you have arranged a mobile fuel-drain specialist to attend there. It is not driven.

Forecourts want the pump area cleared quickly, so tell us if you are blocking a pump — that changes the urgency of the dispatch.

Petrol in a diesel vs diesel in a petrol

Petrol into a diesel is the more serious of the two and should always be treated as engine-off, recovery-out. Diesel into a petrol is generally less damaging — the car often will not run properly at all — but it still needs draining rather than driving off.

Either way, the correct next step is the same: leave the ignition alone and get it moved.

Need this sorted today?

Do not start the engine — call us and we will get the car off the forecourt and to a garage.

Frequently asked questions

I have only put a small amount in. Can I top up with the right fuel?

Do not rely on dilution. Even a modest amount of petrol in a diesel system can cause damage, and the safe answer is to have it drained rather than gambling on a ratio.

I already drove off before realising. What now?

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart. Say on the call that the engine has run — the garage needs to know, because it changes what has to be checked.

Can you drain the fuel at the roadside?

We recover the vehicle to a garage or to a location where a fuel-drain specialist can work. Tell us on the call where you want it taken.

Am I blocking the pump?

If so, say that immediately when you call. Forecourt jobs are treated as urgent because the vehicle is obstructing an operating fuel pump.
