If your van is how you earn, a breakdown is not an inconvenience — it is cancelled jobs, an idle team and tools stranded on the wrong side of the county.
Most of the delay in a commercial recovery is not the driving. It is working out weights, access, who authorises the spend and where the vehicle should go. All of that can be decided in advance.
Hold this on file for every vehicle
Kept in the cab and with whoever answers the phone at the office:
- Registration, make, model and wheelbase
- Plated maximum authorised mass from the VIN plate
- Whether the van is typically loaded, and roughly how heavily
- Your preferred garage, plus a fallback
- Who can authorise a recovery, and their number
- Where spare keys are kept
Decide the destination before it happens
The slowest part of many commercial recoveries is deciding where the van goes. Agreeing a default garage — and a fallback for out-of-hours — removes that conversation entirely from the roadside call.
If your usual garage is at the other end of the county, be realistic: a closer competent garage often gets the van back on the road faster than the familiar one.

Tools, stock and the next job
Think about the load before the truck arrives. Tools left in a van going to an unattended garage overnight are a risk, and heavy stock can be what pushes the recovery into a higher weight category.
Where possible, transfer critical tools to a colleague's vehicle so the day's remaining work continues while the van is dealt with.
Cornwall-specific planning
Travel time here is dominated by the A30 and A38 and by summer congestion. A fleet working the far west and the north coast should expect longer recovery legs than the same business in an urban area, and should plan job scheduling accordingly during peak season.
Where multiple vehicles work out of one base, knowing which of them exceed 3.5 tons when loaded is the single most useful piece of information to have written down.

Frequently asked questions
Do you work with trade and fleet customers?
Yes. We recover vans, light commercials and light trucks up to 7.5 tons across Cornwall, including loaded vehicles and out-of-hours call-outs.
Can you recover a van with tools still in it?
Yes, though the load counts toward the weight and affects which truck is needed. Where a van is going somewhere unattended, consider removing high-value tools first.
Can we set up an account or a preferred garage in advance?
Get in touch and we will talk through how your vehicles are worked and where you want them taken. Having the weights, keyholders and default garage agreed up front is what saves the time.
How fast can you reach a van in west Cornwall?
It depends on where the truck is and traffic on the day. We give you a realistic time on the call rather than an optimistic one, so you can make a sensible decision about the rest of the day's work.
