Roadside Assistance vs Recovery: What's the Difference?

They are often sold together and people use the words interchangeably, but they are two different jobs. Knowing which you need speeds everything up.

Roadside Assistance vs Recovery — Broadside Recovery flatbed working in Cornwall

Roadside assistance means getting your vehicle going again where it stopped, so you can drive it away. Recovery means the vehicle cannot be driven safely, so it is loaded onto a truck and taken somewhere else — a garage, your home or another agreed address. One sends you on your way; the other moves the vehicle for you.

Breakdown policies bundle both under one name, which is why the difference catches people out. When you ring a recovery operator directly, being able to say 'I think this is a roadside fix' or 'this needs to be moved' helps the right help arrive first time.

What roadside assistance typically covers

Roadside help is for minor faults where the vehicle is otherwise sound and it is safe to work on it where it sits. Typical examples include:

  • A flat battery that needs a jump start.
  • A flat tyre where a usable spare is available and there is a safe place to fit it.
  • Minor issues that can be resolved on the spot without dismantling anything.

When it has to be recovery instead

Recovery is the answer whenever the car cannot be made safe to drive where it is, or the location is too dangerous to work in. That includes:

  • Mechanical failures such as a broken clutch, gearbox or cambelt.
  • Overheating, smoke, fluid leaks or a burning smell.
  • Accident damage of any kind.
  • Wrong fuel, where the engine should not be run.
  • Electric vehicles that have run out of charge — these are moved by flatbed only.
  • Any vehicle stopped on a fast road where standing next to it is not safe.

Why the location can decide it for you

A flat tyre on a quiet car park is a roadside job. The same flat tyre on a narrow stretch of dual carriageway with no hard shoulder may not be, because nobody should be kneeling by the offside wheel with traffic passing. In that case the safer choice is to load the vehicle and change the wheel somewhere else. The fault is the same; the location changes the answer.

Cornwall adds its own twist: single-track lanes, blind bends and verges that hide ditches. A job that looks simple on paper can need the vehicle moved to a wider point first.

What happens if a roadside fix fails

Sometimes a jump start works but the battery will not hold charge, or a spare turns out to be flat as well. When that happens the job simply becomes a recovery. It is worth mentioning on the first call if you suspect the problem may be more than it looks — for example, a battery warning that appeared while driving rather than a car that would not start after a cold night.

How this affects the cost

A roadside fix is usually shorter and involves no onward journey, so it tends to cost less than a full recovery. Recovery pricing depends on the distance to the drop-off, the vehicle's size and weight, access and the time of day. Either way, we agree the price on the phone before we set off.

Telling us which you think you need

You do not have to diagnose the fault. Describe what happened in the moments before the car stopped, any warning lights, noises or smells, and where you are. We will say honestly whether a roadside attempt is sensible or whether it is better to go straight to recovery. Ring Broadside Recovery on 07874 130193 — we operate 24/7 across Cornwall.

Frequently asked questions

Is breakdown cover the same as roadside assistance?

Not exactly. Breakdown cover is an insurance-style product that may include roadside assistance, recovery or both, depending on the level. Roadside assistance is the on-the-spot fix itself.

Can you do roadside assistance as well as recovery?

Yes. We offer roadside assistance for minor faults and full flatbed recovery for vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes.

What if I ask for roadside help and it doesn't work?

Then the job becomes a recovery, and the vehicle is loaded and taken to the agreed destination. We will talk you through that before anything changes.

Do I need a membership?

No. You can call us directly without AA, RAC, Green Flag or any other membership.
