Having no breakdown cover does not leave you stuck. You can call a local recovery operator directly, get a price before anyone sets off and pay for that one job. With Broadside Recovery you do not need AA, RAC, Green Flag or any membership — just call 07874 130193 and we will quote and dispatch.
Before any of that, though, make sure you are safe. A price comparison can wait; standing next to a car in live traffic cannot.
1. Safety first, phone calls second
Hazard lights on. If you are on a fast road such as the A30 or A38 and it is safe to do so, get everyone out on the side away from traffic and behind a barrier if there is one. On a narrow lane, think about the blind bend behind you and whether an approaching driver will see the car in time. If anyone is hurt, or the vehicle is in a dangerous position, call 999 first.
2. Work out where you are, precisely
Cornwall's rural roads make vague locations a real problem. A town name is rarely enough. Use your phone's map to note the road number or name, the nearest junction or landmark and which direction you were travelling. A what3words reference or a shared map pin is ideal. The more exact you are, the less time is lost on the day.

3. Decide what help you actually need
Some faults can be sorted where you are, and some cannot. It is worth thinking this through before you ring, because it changes the job.
- Flat battery, flat tyre with a usable spare, or a similar minor fault: roadside assistance may get you moving.
- Car will not start, is unsafe to drive or has accident damage: flatbed recovery to a garage or home.
- Wrong fuel: do not start the engine; the vehicle normally needs moving rather than driving.
- Electric vehicle out of charge: flatbed only, so no driven wheels turn on the road.
4. Joining a breakdown club at the roadside vs calling direct
Some national providers will let you join after you have broken down, usually with an extra fee on top of the membership. That can make sense if you want cover for the rest of the year anyway. If you simply want this one breakdown dealt with, calling an independent local operator is often cheaper than the call-out fee you would pay to join on the spot, and the truck is usually based closer to you.
Either way, ask for the total cost before you commit, and ask where the vehicle will be taken.
5. Get the price agreed before the truck leaves
A reputable operator will quote over the phone once they know the vehicle, the location and the destination. We agree the price on the phone before we set off, and payment arrangements are confirmed on that same call rather than sprung on you at the roadside. If a quote seems vague — 'we'll see when we get there' — ask again, or ring someone else.
The main things that affect the figure are the distance from pick-up to drop-off, the time of day, the size and weight of the vehicle and how easy it is to reach. None of that is a secret, and it is fair to ask how the price was worked out.
6. Pick a destination that makes sense
If a garage is open and willing to take the car, that is usually the best drop-off. Late at night, home is often more practical, with a second move to the garage the next day if needed. If you are on holiday in Cornwall, tell us where you are staying and when you are due to travel home; it helps us suggest what is realistic.
7. While you wait
Stay somewhere safe and visible, keep your phone charged and answer calls from unknown numbers — it may be the driver checking your position. Have the keys and any locking wheel nut key ready. If your situation changes, for example you have moved to a safer spot, ring back and say so.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get recovered without breakdown cover?
Yes. Call us directly — no membership is needed. We quote on the phone, you agree the price, and we dispatch.
Is it cheaper to join a breakdown club after I break down?
Sometimes, but joining at the roadside often carries an extra fee. For a single breakdown, a direct call to a local operator is frequently the cheaper option. Compare the total cost.
Are you open at night?
Yes. Broadside Recovery operates 24/7 across Cornwall.
What if the car just needs a jump start?
Say so when you call. Minor faults such as a flat battery can often be dealt with through roadside assistance rather than full recovery.
