A flat battery is the most common reason we are called out, and in many cases it is fixed at the roadside or on your driveway without the car ever going on a truck.
Signs it really is the battery
Slow cranking, clicking when you turn the key, dim dashboard lights or a car that has sat unused for a week or two all point to the battery. Short journeys in winter, a boot light left on or a failing alternator are the usual causes. If the engine turns over strongly but will not fire, the battery is probably not the problem and we will talk you through what else it could be.
Jump start or recovery?
Where it is safe, our driver will jump-start the vehicle with a proper booster pack rather than jump leads from another car, which protects modern electronics. If the battery will not hold charge, or the fault is the charging system, we can recover the vehicle on a flatbed to a garage or home. Our home start service covers exactly this situation when the car is outside your house.
After the jump
Drive for at least 30 minutes without switching the engine off, keep heavy electrical loads such as heated screens to a minimum and get the battery tested soon. A battery that has gone completely flat once is likely to do it again. Call 07874 130193 any time, day or night — there is no membership needed and we give you the price before we set off.
What to do right now
- Try the headlights first — if they're dim or dead, it's almost certainly the battery
- Make sure interior lights, radio, and accessories are off before we arrive
- Have the keys ready and unlock the bonnet release if you can
- If the car's in a garage or tight space, let us know — we may need to push it out before jumping
What not to do
- Don't keep cranking the engine — you'll drain the battery further and risk damaging the starter
- Don't try jumping from a moving car or one with a smaller battery — modern cars are sensitive to voltage spikes
- Don't disconnect the battery while the engine is running
- Don't ignore repeated flat batteries — there's likely an alternator or parasitic drain issue
What affects the cost
- Whether a jump-start works or full recovery is needed
- Time of day and how far from our Redruth base
- Whether the vehicle is accessible (driveway vs underground car park)
Equipment we bring
- Professional 12V/24V jump pack rated for modern start-stop systems
- Battery health tester to confirm jump-start is appropriate
- Flatbed truck for recovery if battery won't hold charge
Questions drivers ask
Do you charge for a call-out in Cornwall if a jump start works?
Yes — call-out is a fixed fee whether the jump works or full recovery is needed. We quote upfront before dispatch so there are no surprises when we arrive at your Cornwall location.
Will a jump start damage modern car electronics?
Not with the right equipment. We use professional jump packs that match the battery voltage cleanly, unlike jumping from another car which can spike sensitive ECUs on modern vehicles.
How long does a jump-started car need to run before the battery is safe?
Usually 20–30 minutes of driving (not idling) to put meaningful charge back in. If the alternator's faulty it won't charge at all — that's when we recommend recovery to a garage.
Can you replace the battery on the spot?
We don't carry replacement batteries — we focus on getting you started or recovering you to a garage. We can recommend a local battery fitter or recover you directly to one.
Flat batteries in Cornwall are usually a quick fix with the right kit. Broadside Recovery brings a professional jump pack to your door, gets the engine running on-site where possible, and only escalates to full recovery if the battery genuinely won't hold a charge.
