Stuck in Mud or Sand? Safe Winch Recovery Cornwall

Call 07874 130193

Field parking at shows and festivals, soft beach car parks, farm tracks and satnav routes down unmade lanes all catch vehicles out in Cornwall, particularly after rain.

Stop spinning the wheels

The more the wheels spin, the deeper the vehicle digs in, and hot tyres on mud or sand can damage the clutch or transmission. Switch the engine off, check nobody is behind or in front of the vehicle and look at how deep the wheels have sunk. Do not let passengers push from behind a vehicle that could lurch backwards.

Winching out properly

We use a winch and proper recovery points rather than dragging a vehicle by a bumper or tow bar, which can tear panels or bend suspension. The vehicle's own towing eye is the right attachment on most cars; our guide to towing eyes and recovery points explains where to find it. Once free, check for mud packed around the wheels and brakes before driving.

Tell us about access

When you call, tell us the surface, how far the vehicle is from a hard road and whether the gateway or track is narrow, because it decides which truck we send. If the vehicle is damaged or will not drive, we load it onto a flatbed and take it to a garage or home. We work 24/7 across Cornwall with no membership and a clear price up front.

What to do right now

  1. Stop trying to drive out the moment you feel wheels spin — you're digging deeper
  2. Switch off and check for damage underneath (oil leaks, broken sumps)
  3. If on a beach, note the tide direction and time — that's the critical detail when we call back
  4. Note nearest landmark, postcode, or what3words location for accurate dispatch

What not to do

  • Don't rev hard or rock the car — you'll bury the wheels and damage the clutch/transmission
  • Don't let another vehicle pull you out with a rope tied to the bumper — modern bumpers tear
  • Don't push from the front while someone reverses — it's how legs get crushed
  • Don't ignore a leaking sump after extraction — driving away with no oil destroys the engine

What affects the cost

  • Difficulty of access for our truck (lane width, gates, beach approach)
  • Tidal pressure — beach recoveries against the tide are priority and priced accordingly
  • Whether the car is driveable after extraction or needs flatbed transport

Equipment we bring

  • Heavy-duty winch (rated for cars up to 3.5t)
  • Snatch blocks and tree-protector straps for difficult angles
  • Sand and recovery boards for beach extractions
  • Flatbed for post-extraction transport if needed

Questions drivers ask

Can you recover a car from a beach near Cornwall?

Yes — beach recoveries are time-critical (tide-dependent). Call as soon as you're stuck; the longer we wait the more difficult and expensive the extraction becomes as the tide rises. Coverage extends to most accessible beaches near Cornwall.

Will winching damage my car?

Not when done from a proper recovery point. We use the manufacturer's designated recovery eyes, never the bumper or tow ball. Rope-from-a-mate recoveries cause more damage than the original stuck.

What if the field gate is locked and you can't access?

We carry long winch line and snatch blocks specifically for this — we can often recover 30+ metres from the truck position. If access is truly impossible, we'll advise on alternative routes or whether a tractor is needed first.

How long does an off-road extraction take?

Most verge/lane recoveries are 30–60 minutes on scene. Beach jobs against tide are faster (they have to be). Deep mud or vehicle on its side takes longer — we'll quote when we see it.

Off-road and beach recoveries near Cornwall need proper winch gear and someone who won't make things worse. Broadside Recovery extracts from designated recovery points (never bumpers), handles tidal pressure on beach jobs, and flatbeds away if the vehicle can't safely drive after extraction.
